Established in 1898, and a designated Michigan State Historic Site, Sunset Lodge has welcomed tourists to Leelanau County for over 100 years and is located a short drive from Sutton’s Bay
The features that have drawn visitors to Sunset Lodge and Omena since the 1890s are eternal: the magnificent natural environment of lakes and dunes, rivers and forests, orchards and farmland. Today’s visitors can enjoy Leelanau’s vineyards and wineries, art fairs and cultural events, museums and galleries, golf courses, hiking and bicycle trails, state parks and lighthouses, and of course the greatest jewel: Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
Our event areas and gardens make a wonderful location for small weddings, family reunions, and group gatherings.
Owners/Proprietors
Dan & Mary Ziegeler welcome you to the Sunset Lodge.
Mary and Dan make a great team. Mary’s background in guest services and community volunteer work complements Dan’s 30-year career in management consulting. Dan is an avid fly fisherman and knows the area’s rivers and streams well. We enjoy hiking, bicycling, skiing, snowshoeing, and exploring Michigan’s wine and craft beer producers. We are committed to the preservation of Leelanau’s natural beauty, and have a deep appreciation of the historical significance of the region.
We support many area organizations, including the Omena Historical Society, the Omena Village Preservation Association, the Omena Woods Association, the Leelanau Conservancy, Saving Birds Thru Habitat, the Northport Community Arts Center, Rotary Club of Suttons Bay-Leelanau County, and the chambers of commerce for Northport, Suttons Bay, and Leelanau County.
History of Sunset Lodge
Sunset Lodge was established in 1898 by Leonard and Rhoda Wheeler. They came to Omena from Beloit, Wisconsin in 1868 and built a small house just north of the village. After some years they left Omena but eventually returned to build a home for their ‘sunset years’. Their large three- story home on the hill overlooking Omena Bay was completed in 1891.
By that time Omena was becoming a popular summer retreat, and the Wheelers recognized the potential of their wonderful location as ideal for tourists. So their sunset years plan changed, and they developed Sunset Lodge into an expansive full-service resort. READ MORE
